Austria is about to usher in a new era of recycling plastic bottles and beverage cans. From 2025, these single-use packaging will no longer be considered as single-use products.
Consumers need to be more careful with these empty containers, as damaged or crushed bottles and cans will not be recycled in stores and restaurants and may end up being thrown into yellow bins.
The deposit system introduced by the Austrian government will make the value of plastic bottles and beverage cans up to 25 euros. This measure aims to reduce plastic waste and encourage consumers to recycle.
Currently,The recycling price of PET plastic bottles is at least 500 euros per ton, while the price of aluminum packaging is as high as 1,200 euros, which is higher than the cost of new plastic.
By 2029, 90% of PET bottles will need to be collected separately. Currently, the recovery rate in Austria is only 70 per cent, and the Government therefore considers the deposit system to be an effective means of achieving this goal.
In addition, the deposit system is also an effective way to reduce the random discarding of small packaging. In Vienna, it's unfair to blame The Touryst for littering, as the post-event garbage piles show that if the packaging has value,
someone will always pick it up and dispose of it properly.
Some retailers and restaurants have expressed concerns about the deposit system. Vienna's sausage vendors have recently made demands, fearing that the deposit system would threaten their survival.
For small businesses, the deposit system is seen as an unnecessary small transaction and a burden of bureaucracy.
However, industry experts believe that these concerns can be addressed, especially in busy areas. If there are two supermarkets within 300 metres,
they can be exempted from the recycling obligation at any time by making a verbal agreement with the retailer and giving instructions to customers at the booth
